Most large HME/DME software platforms are now backed by private equity or a strategic acquirer rather than run as independent companies. Brightree is owned by ResMed, a public medical device company, after private equity firm Battery Ventures sold its majority stake in 2016. Bonafide and WellSky CareTend sit inside WellSky, which has been jointly owned by private equity firms TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners since 2020. On the independent side, Computers Unlimited (TIMS) remains a privately held, family-owned company with no private equity or conglomerate ownership, and NikoHealth operates as an independently run software company built specifically for the DME/HME category.
Private equity- and corporate-backed platforms
Ownership consolidation has been the dominant trend in DME/HME software since the mid-2010s. Brightree’s $800 million sale to ResMed closed in 2016, ending Battery Ventures’ PE ownership in favor of a public strategic parent. WellSky, formerly Mediware, changed hands from Thoma Bravo to TPG Capital in 2017, then brought on Leonard Green & Partners as a co-owner in 2020 at a valuation north of $3 billion. WellSky has since folded Bonafide, CareTend, and Corridor into its post-acute portfolio, meaning several HME/DME brands now report up through the same two PE sponsors.
Independently operated platforms
Computers Unlimited, developer of TIMS, has stayed privately and family-owned since 1978 and markets that independence directly, noting it is “not a division of a conglomerate, not part of a private equity portfolio.” NikoHealth is also independently operated, without a PE or holding-company parent directing product or pricing decisions.
Why ownership structure matters for DME buyers
Ownership shapes how a platform is run day to day. PE- and holding-company-owned platforms often bundle multiple acquired products, which can slow integration and mean your support ticket is one of several brands competing for the same engineering resources. Independently run vendors typically move faster on roadmap requests because there’s no portfolio-wide roadmap to reconcile against. Neither structure is automatically better, but it’s a reasonable question to raise directly with any vendor during a demo, alongside the evaluation criteria covered in our guide to choosing HME/DME billing software, which includes ownership stability as one factor alongside implementation timelines and denial-handling capability.
